I just heard about this and think it's a great idea. As concerned citizens - no matter which party/candidate you support - we should request our teachers make Election Day a homework free night so that we can discuss and participate in election results as a family.
Personally, I support making Election Day a national holiday, but we're not there yet. The least we could do is have Tuesday night free for family discussions on elections and democracy.
I'm emailing my daughters' teachers after posting this.
(sorry about the double post today - this was just too important to me not to pass on.)

I agree that election day should be a holiday. So many people WON'T vote because they won't be able to get out of work or can't afford it.
We are going to be given an hour to vote tomorrow. AN HOUR. Considering the turnout for early voting, I doubt that will be enough. Luckily, I have a flexible position in my company so it's not a huge deal, but not everybody has this luxury.
I agree with the no homework thing, too, but homework is not yet mandatory for my son.
I am still looking for someone who has cable who also follows the election-and if I find someone, well, there will be no homework done. Eli is following the election as closely as I am, so we will be talking about it, for sure.
Great idea. I love watching election night coverage. I would not even be able to focus on homework. In 2012 Jayson may have to take the bad grade on his assignments. Just kidding. I will just try to get them ahead of time. Kindergarden work can't be that hard...
I think that's an excellent idea! Geez, with all of this hype, all of you Americans have got ME excited...count me in on the watching the coverage :)
Our kids didn't have school today--election day. So I guess they could have done their homework last night, but NOT.
I agree great idea
My kids not only have a homework free evening they didn't have school at ALL today!
=D
Can you believe that our preschool meeting is TONIGHT?! A few parents emailed the president requesting that it be switched to another night, but she said "it can't be done." WTF? I'm sorry, but my husband and I want to be glued to the TV to see the outcome of this election, not sitting in too-small chairs disinfecting plastic play food!!!
Our future is bright!
Lots of European countries vote on the weekend so that most people don't work. But what fun is that?
Hooray for holidays!
